Delhi Mayor Pays Tribute to Freedom Fighter Lala Ram Charan Aggarwal, Remembered for Civic Vision and National Service

At Ram Charan Aggarwal Chowk, ITO, Delhi Mayor Sardar Raja Iqbal Singh led a solemn ceremony to honor the birth anniversary of Lala Ram Charan Aggarwal (1917–1977), a towering figure of India’s freedom struggle and the city’s first Deputy Mayor. Floral tributes were offered at his statue, with senior dignitaries joining in remembrance of a leader whose life bridged the fight for independence and the pursuit of civic welfare.

Aggarwal’s legacy is deeply woven into Delhi’s political and cultural fabric. Imprisoned multiple times during the freedom movement, he emerged as a respected patriot whose commitment to public service extended far beyond independence. As Deputy Mayor, he championed the development of residential colonies for the poor, ensuring access to civic amenities at a time when Delhi was rapidly expanding. His vision reflected a rare blend of nationalist fervor and grassroots governance.

The Mayor, in his address, described Aggarwal as “a true patriot who dedicated his life to the welfare of citizens,” urging Delhiites to draw inspiration from his example. Historical records note that Aggarwal’s contributions were recognized nationally — India Post issued a commemorative stamp in his honor in 2009, underscoring his enduring relevance.

Today, the bustling ITO intersection, renamed nearly two decades ago as Ram Charan Aggarwal Chowk, stands as a living reminder of his service. For Delhi’s civic community, his memory continues to symbolize transparency, inclusivity, and the spirit of sacrifice that shaped modern India.
