On the eve of Christmas, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), under the leadership of Vice Chairperson Kuljeet Singh Chahal, launched a 15-day Special Cleanliness Drive. The initiative, aligned with the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan envisioned by Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi Ji, aims to transform the NDMC area into a clean, green, and dust-free zone during the festive season.
The drive began with a Special Wet and Dry Cleaning Programme at Sacred Heart Cathedral and the Gole Dak Khana Roundabout, extending to other churches and religious places across the city.
Why NDMC Area Matters
Chahal emphasized the national importance of the NDMC zone, which houses:
- Residences and offices of VVIPs
- Parliament of India
- Foreign embassies
- Major central government offices
With thousands of tourists flocking to Delhi during Christmas and New Year celebrations, NDMC has prepared a comprehensive sanitation action plan covering:
- Religious places: churches, temples, gurudwaras
- Public spaces: markets, parks, green belts
- Civic infrastructure: roads, footpaths, and roundabouts
Beyond Cleaning: A Green Touch
The drive goes beyond routine sanitation. NDMC teams will also:
- Wash trees and prune branches
- Remove dry leaves and malba (construction debris)
- Clear footpaths and public spaces for aesthetic appeal
By conducting night-time wet and dry cleaning operations, NDMC aims to reduce dust and air pollution, ensuring citizens wake up to a fresh and healthy environment.

Special duty rosters have been assigned to sanitation staff, officers, and employees. Chahal praised the dedication of Team NDMC, noting that the civic body is among the first in the country to undertake such a large-scale festive cleanliness drive during evening and night hours.
He reiterated NDMC’s commitment to realizing the Prime Minister’s vision of a Clean India, calling the initiative a model of civic responsibility and public participation.
