MCD’s Horticulture department unique initiative Explained: 5ft x 5ft x5ft formula to recharge Ground water

Rainwater harvesting system is meant to help in water conservation. To ensure that rainwater harvesting systems in city’s parks function at optimal level ahead of approaching rainy season. MCD successfully completes cleaning of rainwater harvesting system at 394 parks ahead of monsoon located across 12 municipal zones.

MCD has taken a significant step toward sustainable water management and urban climate resilience by adopting this simple yet scientifically sound method of rain water harvesting. The system comprises a 5ft x 5ft x5 ft pit dug around a vertical pipe inserted into the defunct bore well.

The pipe is perforated to allow the direct entry of rainwater. It is wrapped in permeable geotextile fabric to prevent clogging, and the pit is filled with layers of small and medium-sized pebble—materials chosen for their excellent filtration and percolation properties.

The surrounding land is levelled to create a gentle slope towards the structure, ensuring that all surface runoff from the park naturally flows into the pit. This promotes efficient rainwater infiltration, leading to effective groundwater recharge. This initiative not only prevents surface waterlogging but also helps replenish the local water table.

Each system has been constructed at a minimal cost of Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000, using locally available and eco-friendly materials.

MCD has planned to install 115 more RWHS during this year and it will also be developed as low cost technique using existing borewells.

These rainwater harvesting systems have been developed by MCD’s Horticulture department as cost-effective groundwater recharge solutions, utilizing previously defunct borewells that were once used for park irrigation.
