Marking the beginning of Independence Month celebrations, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) today launched a New Delhi city-wide cleanliness campaign on the theme of “Delhi Ko Kude Se Aazadi” – a clarion call for freedom from garbage and unclean surroundings.
The campaign was officially flagged off by NDMC Chairperson Keshav Chandra from Shaheed Bhagat Singh Place, Gole Market, in the presence of senior NDMC officials, sanitation workers, representatives from Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), and members of local Market Traders’ Associations.

In alignment with Mahatma Gandhi’s vision of a Swachh and Samriddh Bharat, this month-long initiative (from August 1 to August 31, 2025) aims to inspire a cleaner, greener, and healthier Capital through collective community action and institutional effort.
As part of the inaugural event, Shri Chandra led the sanitation drive alongside staff and community members, emphasizing the dignity of labour and the power of united civic participation. He later conducted special in-house sanitation drive in NDMC’s Commercial Department offices located at Shaheed Bhagat Singh Place.
During the in-house sanitation drive in the offices of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Place, he directed officials to undertake immediate measures for scanning of documents and thereafter, weeding out outdated records, disposing of condemned furniture and electronic waste, and maintaining hygienic and clutter-free office premises.
He instructed to all officials for keeping the files and records in almirahs after their categorisation and catalogue instead of scattering manners. He reiterated that each department must take responsibility for the upkeep of its space through systematic review, decluttering, and disposal processes.
Speaking on the occasion, Chandra said -“This campaign is not just about cleaning our surroundings—it is a tribute to our nation heroes in the Independence Day month and a reaffirmation of our collective responsibility towards our duties for the nation. Let us make New Delhi not only cleaner, but a model capital city that reflects the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi and the spirit of ‘Swachh Bharat’.”
He further elaborated that the campaign will include a variety of activities across NDMC departments, including schools, healthcare institutions, public parks, offices, and marketplaces. Each Supervisory Staff will conduct its own Clean Campus Drives, sanitation checks, awareness sessions, and digital campaigns to promote behavioral change and sustainable hygiene practices.
NDMC Chairperson urges citizens, students, resident groups, traders, and institutions to join hands and participate actively in the campaign. By engaging all sections of society, the initiative aims to transform the idea of cleanliness from a civic duty into a nationwide movement of pride and empowerment.
Today’s campaign witnessed the activities like Government employees cleaning their own office spaces, Students conducting clean campus drives in school, Healthcare staff leading sanitation activities in hospitals and dispensaries. The in-house sanitation drive held today in the NDMC’s offices – Palika Kendra, Mohan Singh Place, Pragati Bhawan, Electric sub stations, Fire control rooms, Civil & Electric inquiry offices.
In the coming days, the special sanitation drive will be carried out in the market and residential complexes in association with Residents Welfare Association and Market’s Trader Association. On the other hand painting, essay and slogan competition will be organized among the students in all NDMC’s schools. “Clean My City” march will also be organized with the Sanitation workers, volunteers, teachers and doctors for creating awareness about the Swachhta campaign.
