Patients’ attendants near AIIMS, RML & Lady Harding Hospitals to benefit;NDMC Opens Barat Ghars & Community Halls as Night Shelters for the Needy

In a significant welfare initiative, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has opened its Barat Ghars and Community Halls as night shelters for the needy. The announcement was made by NDMC Vice Chairman Kuljeet Singh Chahal, who emphasized that the step aligns with the vision of service-oriented governance championed by Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Chahal stated that, in compliance with the High Court’s directions, NDMC is providing these facilities to patients and their attendants visiting major hospitals like AIIMS, Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, and Lady Harding Hospital. The arrangement is being executed in coordination with the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB).

He clarified that only those halls without prior bookings are being converted into shelters, ensuring that the general public does not face inconvenience. Senior NDMC officers reviewed the arrangements in a meeting, and a special monitoring team has been constituted to oversee smooth functioning, availability of facilities, and coordination with DUSIB.

Under this arrangement:

  • NDMC provides space, water, and electricity
  • DUSIB supplies beds and essential items
  • Kidwai Nagar Community Hall has already been taken over by DUSIB and is housing homeless persons rescued from the AIIMS area.

Currently, three Barat Ghars—Kidwai Nagar, Laxmibai Nagar, and Mandir Marg—are operational as shelters. Additional measures include:

  • Stationing of extra water tankers at AIIMS and ensuring regular supply at all shelter locations.
  • Deployment of mobile toilet vehicles and portable toilets near AIIMS.
  • Extension of PTU timings till late night.
  • Provision of 50 beds by DUSIB at Kidwai Nagar Barat Ghar.

Chahal highlighted that the initiative will continue till 15th March, aiming to protect vulnerable citizens from the harsh winter and rain, while offering them safe and dignified shelter. He reiterated NDMC’s commitment to supporting weaker sections of society, calling the move a reflection of the humane and welfare-oriented vision of the Prime Minister.
