Union Minister Manohar Lal Vows to Eliminate Bhalswa Landfill by 2nd October Next Year

Manohar Lal Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs today visited the Bhalswa Landfill Site to inspect the legacy waste disposal work on the occasion of Seva Pakhwada. Dignitaries present on the occasion planted trees under the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” campaign. Manohar Lal viewed a presentation on legacy waste disposal and inspected the landfill site. Ashish Sood Minister of Urban Development Government of Delhi; Sardar Raja Iqbal Singh Mayor Delhi; Jai Bhagwan Yadav, Deputy Mayor; Satya Sharma Chairperson Standing Committee; Sunder Singh Deputy Chairman Standing Committee; Pravesh Wahi, Leader of House; Gulab Singh Chairman Civil Lines Zone; Sandeep Kapoor Chairman, Environment Management Services Committee;Commissioner MCD Ashwani Kumar; Additional Commissioners Jitendra Yadav and Pankaj Naresh Agarwal; Anshul Sirohi, Deputy Commissioner Civil Lines Zone; and senior Municipal Corporation officials were also present on the occasion.

Manohar Lal Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs stated that the Seva Pakhwada will be observed from 17th September the birthday of Prime Minister
Narendra Modi to 2nd October the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi and former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri. He said that on this occasion events like cleanliness drive, Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam,blood donation camps, and other competitions will be organized. He said that a major cleanliness program will be organized on 25th September the birth anniversary of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya. Under the “One Day, One Hour, One Year” program cleanliness programs will be launched in the surroundings, offices, and homes in which all citizens will be contributing.

Manohar Lal said that during the Seva Pakhwada various religious events such as Navratri and Dussehra will be celebrated where special attention will be paid to cleanliness. He said that all the dignitaries of the country were appealed to adopt any one place for cleanliness. He said 1,470 legacy waste dumps have been identified in the country. Manohar Lal said that Delhi has three sanitary landfill sites located at Bhalswa, Ghazipur, and Okhla. Manohar Lal said that he has taken the responsibility of cleaning all three landfill sites in Delhi. He said that Delhi ministers are requested to work in partnership with agencies. He said that the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has been appointed as the partner for the work at the Bhalswa landfill site.

Manohar Lal stated that after Bio remediation approximately 25 acres of land has been cleared at the Bhalswa landfill site of which 5 acres have been developed as bamboo gardens and the remaining 20 acres have been used for installation of sanitation related machinery. He added that until now fresh waste and legacy waste were being disposed off at the same site but now we have decided to dispose of fresh waste separately. Manohar Lal stated that the 45 Lakh metric tons of legacy waste accumulated at the Bhalswa landfill site will be disposed of before 2nd October next year. He stated that he would personally oversee this work and that all agencies would work together in this direction.

Manohar Lal stated that this legacy waste problem has existed since 1980. He stated that when he was the Chief Minister of Haryana he would see this mountain of garbage every time he went by and it was a source of anguish. He added that the inert waste generated after the disposal of legacy waste was used in the construction of UER-2. RDF is being used as fuel in cement factories and C&D waste is being used in tile manufacturing. Compost manure made from legacy waste is being used in DDA and MCD parks.

Manohar Lal said that we have resolved to eliminate the garbage mountain at the Bhalswa landfill site within a year. He said that I request citizens to contribute to this cleanliness campaign and incorporate cleanliness into their nature and culture. Shri Manohar Lal praised the work of the MCD employees working at the landfill site, the waste disposal company employees, and the garbage truck drivers. He said that even in difficult circumstances all these employees perform their duties with full dedication. He said that as a token of thanks we will provide an incentive of Rs. 5,000 to all these employees and they will also undergo health checkups to detect any health problems in time.

DelhiтАЩs Urban Development Minister, Ashish Sood, said that the Delhi GovernmentтАЩs resolve to transform the city from тАЬmountains of garbageтАЭ into a тАЬclean capitalтАЭ is being rapidly fulfilled. In this sequence, the Bhalswa landfill site was inspected today. He further stated that the long-standing problem of massive landfill sites in the capital is being resolved decisively through scientific methods. More than 50 percent of the waste at these three landfill sites has already been processed, and a clear target has been set for their complete elimination. This is not merely an infrastructural achievement, but also stands as evidence of the Chief MinisterтАЩs resolve to restore DelhiтАЩs environmental dignity.

He further added that the making of a тАЬDeveloped DelhiтАЭ will not be by copying any foreign city, but by building a capital that reflects IndiaтАЩs historical and cultural heritage while fulfilling the aspirations of a modern, globally leading nation.

Delhi Mayor Sardar Raja Iqbal Singh said that we have promised to eliminate the garbage mountains. We have reduced the height of the Bhalswa landfill site by 15 meters. He added that the Bhalswa landfill site previously held 73 lakh metric tons of legacy waste, which has now been reduced to 43 lakh metric tons. The Mayor stated that despite the daily arrival of new waste the amount of waste at the landfill is decreasing.

Sardar Raja Iqbal Singh stated that the waste disposed off at the landfill is being used in power plants, tile manufacturing, and filling of low lying areas. The Mayor stated that we are working with clear intentions and our endeavor is to serve the public during the Seva Pakhwada. He added that we have pledged to eliminate the Bhalswa landfill site within a year.
