From Smart Irrigation to Sewerage Reforms: NDMC’s Blueprint for a Future-Ready New Delhi

The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has rolled out an ambitious roadmap to transform the capital’s civic infrastructure in line with the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji’s vision of Viksit Bharat @2047. At a press conference held at the NDMC Convention Centre, Vice Chairperson Shri Kuljeet Singh Chahal, accompanied by Member Shri Anil Valmiki and senior departmental heads, outlined a series of forward-looking initiatives spanning water management, sewerage reforms, and environmental sustainability.

Smart Irrigation: Greening the Capital with Technology

Chahal announced the adoption of a Smart Irrigation System, a modern, automated solution designed to conserve water and reduce wastage. By deploying mechanized irrigation in parks, gardens, and green belts, NDMC aims to ensure water is used only where and when required.

  • Phase I (2026): Covering 11 major roads, including Nehru Park, Shanti Path, and Ashoka Road, with a total stretch of 19.28 km. Estimated cost: ₹15.94 crore.
  • Phase II (2026–27): Expansion to 11 more roads and 5 gardens, including Lodhi Garden and Sanjay Lake Park, covering 19.61 km. Estimated cost: ₹16 crore.

This initiative is expected to reduce tanker movement, cut air pollution, and improve plant health while lowering operational costs.

Decentralized Sewage Treatment: Recycling for Sustainability

Highlighting NDMC’s commitment to water reuse, Chahal informed that 12 Decentralized Sewage Treatment Plants (DSTPs) are already operational, supplying treated water for irrigation.

  • Upcoming Projects (2026):
  • 5 new DSTPs with a combined capacity of 2250 KLD at sites including Nehru Park and Bharti Nagar. Estimated cost: ₹57 crore.
  • 8 additional DSTPs under the PPP model at locations such as Rose Garden, Lodhi Garden, and Talkatora Garden. Estimated cost: ₹150 crore.

These projects will significantly reduce dependence on potable water, ensuring sustainable resource utilization.

Sewerage Rehabilitation: Reviving Aging Infrastructure

Acknowledging the challenges posed by decades-old sewerage systems in Lutyens’ Delhi, NDMC has proposed extensive rehabilitation works:

  • Twin Barrel Sewer (2100 mm): From C-Hexagon to Lodhi Road, estimated cost ₹77 crore (Part I) and ₹77 crore (Part II).
  • CIPP Technology Upgrade: Cleaning and rehabilitation of 450 mm sewer line from Sardar Patel Marg to Shanti Path, cost ₹8 crore.
  • Ashoka Road Sewer (1100–1200 mm): Rehabilitation from Nirvachan Sadan to C-Hexagon, cost ₹19 crore.
  • Brick Barrel Sewer: From Kushak Nallah to Aurobindo Marg, cost ₹23 crore.

These projects will modernize the city’s sewerage backbone, minimize breakdowns, and enhance public health outcomes.

Towards Viksit Bharat @2047

Chahal emphasized that these reforms are not isolated projects but part of a larger vision of sustainable urban development. By integrating smart technology, recycled water, and advanced engineering, NDMC aims to deliver reliable, eco-friendly civic services.

“Our commitment is to make New Delhi clean, green, and future-ready. These initiatives will strengthen infrastructure, reduce environmental impact, and improve citizen services in line with the Prime Minister’s vision of Viksit Bharat @2047,” Chahal stated.
