Jetty Construction, Safety Infra, and Route Planning Reviewed for Delhi’s First River Cruise

A high-level inspection was conducted today at Sonia Vihar, Delhi, to review the preparations for the upcoming cruise service on the Yamuna River. The inspection was jointly attended by the Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, the Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor of Delhi V. K. Saxena, Delhi’s Minister for Water Shri Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma, and Delhi’s Tourism Minister Kapil Mishra.

During the inspection, the dignitaries reviewed key development works associated with the project, such as jetty construction, safety mechanisms, passenger amenities, and the progress of the cruise route planning. The project is advancing rapidly with coordinated efforts between the Central Government, the office of the Lieutenant Governor, and the Government of Delhi. The Yamuna cruise service aims to strengthen water transport in Delhi, redefine tourism, boost economic activities, and support ongoing efforts for the rejuvenation of the Yamuna.

This initiative is expected to generate employment, enhance tourism-led businesses, and elevate Delhi’s global identity. With a new vision and fresh approach, the Yamuna River is set to emerge as a cultural and economic strength of the national capital.

Following the joint inspection, Tourism Minister Shri Kapil Mishra said that the upcoming launch of the first-ever cruise service on the Yamuna marks a historic transformation in Delhi’s tourism sector. This service is a significant step towards placing Delhi on the global tourism map, boosting economic activities, and reviving the cultural identity associated with the Yamuna. He added that this reflects the newfound confidence of New Delhi.

Delhi’s first cruise service on the Yamuna River is an ambitious project aimed at modernizing the city’s water transport system. Works such as jetty construction, passenger amenities, safety infrastructure, and route planning in the Sonia Vihar region are progressing swiftly. The water transport project between Sonia Vihar and Jagatpur aims not only to promote tourism but also to raise public awareness about the river and develop an environmentally sensitive transportation system. It will create new employment opportunities, strengthen the tourism-driven economy, and reinstate the significance of the Yamuna on a larger scale.

For this project, the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways of the Government of India, has signed an MoU with the Government of NCT of Delhi (GNCTD). This MoU will serve as a historic foundation for strengthening river cruise tourism between Sonia Vihar and Jagatpur, paving the way for developing the Yamuna as “Delhi’s new identity.”
