PDS Transparency: real-time recording of weight data in Delhi’s Public Distribution System (PDS)

PDS Transparency: Delhi’s Public Distribution System (PDS), the Food and Civil Supplies Department will begin integrating electronic Point of Sale (ePoS) devices with digital weighing machines at all 1967 Fair Price Shops (FPS) across the city.  “The integration of ePoS and weighing machines is a long-awaited reform that will eliminate manual discrepancies, ensure real-time authentication, and guarantee accurate quantity delivery to every beneficiary,” said Shri Sirsa.

Minister issued clear directions to all FPS dealers and department officials to strictly ensure the regular maintenance of ePoS machines, adding that no eligible beneficiary should be denied ration due to technical glitches or operational lapses.

Further, in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘One Nation, One Ration Card’ (ONORC) initiative, Sirsa instructed that ration must be provided without delay to all eligible ONORC beneficiaries, including migrant beneficiaries.

He added, “Strict action will be taken against Fair Price Shop dealers who deny free and rightful ration under NFSA to eligible beneficiaries. Additionally, every FPS must prominently display ONORC-related eligibility details on display boards to ensure migrant beneficiaries can access their entitlements without confusion or hardship.”

The integration of ePoS with weighing machines will enable real-time recording of weight data during each transaction, thereby helping the department ensure accurate dispensation, prevent stock diversion, and minimize the scope for malpractices in the system.

The meeting also served as a platform to discuss operational issues faced by FPS dealers. Shri Sirsa assured the delegation that all genuine concerns will be addressed promptly, and that the government remains committed to collaborative problem-solving to strengthen PDS delivery.

Department of Food Supplies and Consumer Affairs is already executing several structural reforms — including large-scale verification of ration cardholders, removal of ineligible entries from the NFSA database, and enhanced real-time digital monitoring.

Directions for all FPS dealers and department officials are as under-

              •            Integration of ePoS devices with digital weighing machines to be implemented at all 1967 Fair Price Shops in Delhi.

              •            “This move will ensure real-time authentication and accurate delivery to every beneficiary,” said Shri Manjinder Singh Sirsa.

              •            Minister directs strict compliance in issuing ration to all ONORC beneficiaries and regular maintenance of ePoS machines.

              •            Strict action to be taken against FPS dealers denying ration to eligible beneficiaries; ONORC eligibility details must be prominently displayed.

              •            Integration will enable real-time recording of weight data and help prevent diversion or malpractices in ration distribution.
