A domestic tragedy unfolded late Tuesday night in Pant Nagar, Jungpura, when a 37-year-old woman was fatally shot by her teenage son while he was allegedly handling an illegal firearm.
Police confirmed that a PCR call was received at 10:39 PM from Moolchand Hospital, reporting Mrs. Sumati, a resident of Pant Nagar, brought dead with a gunshot wound to the face. Sumati, who worked as domestic help to support her family, leaves behind her husband, Chotu, a daily-wage gardener, and three children, including an 11-year-old daughter.
Investigators revealed that the incident occurred inside the Valmiki Mandir JJ settlement under PS Hazrat Nizamuddin jurisdiction. Preliminary enquiry identified her son, Tarun (18), as the accused. According to police, Tarun had procured a country-made pistol from an individual in Ashram. While demonstrating the weapon to his mother, it accidentally discharged, causing the fatal injury.
Following a swift pursuit, police apprehended Tarun. He later led officers to a nearby drain where he had discarded the firearm. The weapon has since been recovered.
Crime teams were deployed to the scene to collect forensic evidence. A case has been registered under FIR no. 42/2026, invoking Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) along with Sections 25, 27, and 54 of the Arms Act. Authorities have launched efforts to trace and arrest the supplier of the illegal weapon.
This incident highlights the growing concern over the circulation of unlicensed firearms in urban clusters and the devastating consequences they can bring to vulnerable families.
