Delhi Walkathon boosts Dust-Free Drive, citizens march for cleaner air

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), South Zone, organized a mega walkathon to strengthen its ongoing ‘Dust Free Delhi’ campaign, drawing enthusiastic participation from over 500 citizens. The initiative reflects a growing collective commitment towards environmental sustainability and improved urban air quality.
The walkathon was led by the MCD Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar, and was attended by Himani Jain, Councillor, Vasant Vihar, along with Deputy Commissioner of the zone Rakesh Kumar.

The walkathon commenced at 7:00 AM (24th March) from DDA Park, Vasant Vihar, and culminated at the MCD Nursery, covering a distance of approximately 3 kilometres. The event featured musical elements and creative awareness activities, effectively engaging residents and reinforcing the message of community participation in dust mitigation and environmental protection.

Vision for a Sustainable and Cleaner Delhi

Addressing participants at the conclusion of the walkathon, Commissioner Sh Khirwar emphasized the urgent need for sustained and proactive dust control measures across the city. He outlined a forward-looking vision anchored in two key pillars:

  • The development of Zero-Waste Colonies, transforming residential areas into self-sustaining and environmentally responsible ecosystems.
  • The promotion of waste segregation at source as a critical step towards effective solid waste management.

Strengthening Support for Swachhata Sainiks

Reaffirming MCD’s commitment to the welfare of sanitation workers, protective masks were distributed to Swachhata Sainiks of the South Zone, with support from Ecowings NGO.

Highlighting the importance of worker safety, the Commissioner issued directions to further strengthen safety protocols to prevent road accidents involving sanitation staff. In recognition of their dedicated service, tracksuits were also presented to Sanitary Superintendents and Sanitary Inspectors.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by DC Sh Rakesh Kumar, who expressed appreciation to the Commissioner, the area councillor and the residents of Vasant Vihar for their active participation and support in making the initiative a success.
