Chairperson Standing Committee Satya Sharma held a high-level meeting today with officials on the issue of stray dogs in light of the new revised directions issued by the Supreme Court. The meeting reviewed the current situation and discussed in detail the steps taken so far by the MCD as well as the future action plan.
Referring to the Supreme Court’s order regarding the ban on feeding dogs at public places, Sharma directed the officials to identify suitable areas for feeder places. She further instructed them to immediately prepare a concrete action plan to ensure large-scale sterilization of stray dogs. Sharma also directed that arrangements be made to keep aggressive and rabies-infected dogs in shelter homes. Additionally, coordination should be established with animal lovers and various NGOs for the care and rehabilitation of dogs.
She directed that the action plan must be implemented in a time-bound manner so that the Supreme Court’s orders are strictly complied with, while also ensuring both public safety and animal welfare. Sharma stated that the Corporation is committed to finding a permanent solution to this issue and to fully implementing the directions of the Hon’ble Supreme Court. She further stressed that the safety and convenience of citizens remain the topmost priority of the MCD.
Chairperson added that Our objective is not limited to population control of dogs alone but to adopt a holistic approach that balances animal welfare with public health. The Corporation, in collaboration with all concerned agencies, experts, and animal lovers, is taking effective steps in this direction.
