Advocate Shantanu Jugtawat Appointed Central Government Counsel by Ministry of Law and Justice

The Ministry of Law and Justice has appointed Advocate Shantanu Jugtawat as Central Government Counsel, entrusting him with the responsibility of representing the Union Government in crucial constitutional and civil matters before the country’s courts.

In a significant move, the Government of India has named Shantanu Jugtawat as Central Government Counsel, a role that places him at the forefront of litigation involving various ministries and departments. Jugtawat, originally from Jodhpur, Rajasthan, is widely recognized for his expertise in constitutional and criminal law.

Currently serving as Special Public Prosecutor for the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the National Investigation Agency (NIA), Jugtawat also holds the position of Senior Public Prosecutor for the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Delhi. His career trajectory includes serving as Standing Counsel for the Finance Department (Commercial Taxes), Government of Rajasthan.

An alumnus of National Law Institute University (NLIU), Bhopal, Jugtawat has been practicing before the Supreme Court of India and the Rajasthan High Court since 2010. He secured the 34th rank in the Delhi Judicial Services Examination that same year. His early career was shaped under the mentorship of late Amarendra Sharan, former Additional Solicitor General of India.

Over the years, Jugtawat has appeared in several landmark cases before the Supreme Court, including the Sabarimala temple entry case, the Hathras rape case (Satyama Dubey petition), State of Punjab vs. Devender Singh on sub-categorisation within Scheduled Castes, and Saurav Yadav vs. State of Uttar Pradesh concerning vertical and horizontal reservation.

His appointment is being viewed as recognition of his consistent contribution to constitutional, criminal, and public law litigation, reinforcing the government’s legal representation in high-stakes matters.
