MCD organises Gandhi Jayanti Mela at Civic Centre to mark Mahatma Gandhi’s 157th birth anniversary

Municipal Corporation of Delhi organized a grand ‘Gandhi Jayanti Mela’ today at its Headquarters in the Civic Centre to mark the 157th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

Welcoming the Russian Ambassador to the programme, Pravesh Wahi stated that Gandhi ji showed us the path of truth and non-violence—a path we all ought to remember. They paid floral tributes at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi on the occasion.During the fair, the Mayor, along with the Russian Ambassador and the MCD Commissioner, paid tribute on Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary by spinning the Charkha.

They also inspected a photo exhibition featuring Mahatma Gandhi and the great Russian writer and philosopher Leo Tolstoy. Speaking on the occasion, Russian Ambassador Denis Alipov said that Gandhiji belongs to the entire world and that the message of truth, non-violence, and human dignity he imparted to India remains deeply meaningful for the global community.

He congratulated the Municipal Corporation of Delhi for organizing the Gandhi Jayanti fair.Visitors to the fair tried their hand at the spinning wheel charkha during the ‘Akhand Charkha Yajna’ and recalled Gandhiji’s contributions to the freedom movement.

They also toured the various stalls set up at the fair, gathering information about the products and services on display.In his address, Mayor Pravesh Wahi stated that the life of Mahatma Gandhi—who inspired the entire world to follow the path of peace and non-violence—was an ideal in itself. His concepts of Swadeshi (self-reliance) and Swaraj (self-rule) will continue to inspire generations to come.Mayor Wahi emphasized that on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, everyone must pledge to ensure that every individual in society has access to quality education, healthcare, and other essential amenities.

Exhibitions were organized at the fair by the Public Health Department and other departments of the Corporation. Several NGOs and self help groups also took part in the exhibition.In addition to these activities, students from MCD schools presented cultural programs. The performances by the schoolchildren at the Kedarnath Sahni Auditorium, won the hearts of the audience, who enthusiastically cheered for the children with thunderous applause.
