Recognizing the urgency of the situation, NDMC has launched a comprehensive pollution control drive focusing on dust suppression, smog reduction, greening, and public participation.
Key Initiatives by NDMC to Curb Air Pollution
- Mechanical Road Sweeping
NDMC operates 4 Mechanical Road Sweeping Machines (MRS) to clean approximately 220–230 km of avenue roads daily in two shifts.
5 new CNG-operated MRS are being procured for enhanced cleaning of roads and lanes.
Procurement is also underway for 4 battery-operated MRS for lane-by-lane sweeping and 4 small ride-on sweepers for footpaths and parking areas.
- Deployment of Anti-Smog Guns
8 mobile Anti-Smog Guns (ASG) are deployed daily, covering 320–340 km of NDMC roads.
Ten (10) ASGs have been installed on private high-rise buildings and 3 ASGs on NDMC’s own buildings.
7 additional ASGs are being procured for further installation on NDMC buildings; tenders have been invited.
- Installation of Mist Spray Systems
Mist spray systems installed at a height of 5–6 meters on electric poles have been introduced on a trial basis.
15 mist spray units have been installed along Lodhi Road to control localized dust pollution.
1,323 poles covering 29.5 km of road length have been identified for system installation, with tenders already called.
Work is in progress for installing 30 spray systems along Shanti Path and Africa Avenue.
NDMC plans to install these systems in two phases—the first phase covering 10 major roads, and the second covering 14 additional roads.
- Washing of footpath by using pressure Jet Machines.
There are 22 markets in NDMC area. NDMC has started night cleaning of footpaths in three markets, namely Connaught Place, Khan Market & Sarojini Nagar. NDMC deployed three pressure jetting machines and one litter picker to clean the footpath of these markets. NDMC is also proposing to cover all the 22 markets in coming year by cleaning the footpath procuring 10 water sprinkles, 5 more pressure jetting machines, 9 more litter picker and 10 floor cleaner machines to minimise the dust pollution in NDMC area.
- Tree washing
NDMC deployed water tanker with pressure jet pump for tree washing that also help to minimum the dust pollution.
Presently 09 Nos. of water tankers has been installed with the system and are in operation in NDMC area. The system will efficiently wash the greens by mist of water to reduce dust pollution. The system ensures more area coverage with less water consumption. The tanker will cover about 05 Running KM per trip
The Department is also in a process of installing high pressure jetting system on 12 Nos. of existing water tankers.
- Greening and Plantation
NDMC emphasis for greening and plantation for which runs regular campaigns for public participation for using green energy/tree plantation/ShramYogdan for cleaning/Ek Ped Ma Ke Nam etc.
During the current year the brown patches have been covered by plantation in NDMC area. In this drive about 24 important roads have been covered in addition to plantation of minor brown patches on other roads. Under the campaign “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” 2320 Nos. of trees have been planted by involving active participation of Schools, RWAs, MTAs, Office staff etc.
- Special Cleanliness Drives
As part of the daily Swachhta campaign, NDMC teams sweep and wash roads, pavements, and public areas to remove dust and airborne pollutants. This multi-pronged approach is crucial to improving air quality and maintaining a clean environment in the NDMC area.
In addition, NDMC conducts night sweeping operations in prominent market areas such as Sarojini Nagar, Khan Market, Janpath, and Connaught Place, ensuring that these high-footfall zones remain clean and dust-free before the start of each business day.
- Public Appeal
Shri Chahal said every day, lakhs of people visit New Delhi for work and tourism. He appeals to all citizens and visitors to contribute towards reducing pollution at an individual level.
He said Nature alone cannot prevent pollution—it is the collective responsibility of every citizen to adopt eco-friendly habits and help keep the environment clean.
