A man was killed and his 25-year-old son injured after a years-old dilapidated building collapsed in the Jawalapuri area under the jurisdiction of Paschim Vihar West police station in outer Delhi on Thursday evening, police said.
The incident triggered panic in the locality as the old structure suddenly came crashing down.
According to preliminary information, the building was in a dilapidated condition and was being demolished as part of reconstruction work when it collapsed.
The father and son, identified as Shamshul and his 25-year-old son Shoaib, were present at the site when the structure gave way and were trapped under the debris.
Soon after receiving information about the incident, rescue personnel and civic agencies reached the spot and launched a search and rescue operation.
The teams managed to pull both men out from the debris in an injured condition and rushed them to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Shamshul later succumbed to his injuries during treatment, while Shoaib remains admitted at the hospital, according to the information available.
In view of the condition of the remaining structure, a team from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) also reached the spot.
Civic authorities are taking necessary precautionary measures to prevent any further incident in the area and to ensure the safety of people living nearby.
