MCD Declares Dilapidated Welcome Building a Danger Zone After Balcony Collapse
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on Friday declared a dilapidated four-storey building in northeast Delhi's Welcome area a danger zone and pasted a notice on it following the collapse of a balcony that left a young girl injured, officials said.
An MCD team visited the building in X Block, near Photo Chowk, on Friday morning and inspected its condition. Following the inspection, the building was declared unsafe, and steps are being taken to demolish it to prevent any further mishap and ensure the safety of residents in the neighbourhood.
The incident occurred when a balcony on the second floor of the four-storey building suddenly collapsed. A young girl was injured in the incident and was taken to a hospital for treatment. She has since been discharged and returned home, according to the information provided.
Following the incident, the condition of the building was highlighted, prompting the civic authorities to inspect the structure. The MCD team subsequently pasted a notice on the building and made necessary safety arrangements at the site.
Demolition planned
The civic body is preparing to demolish the dilapidated structure, keeping in view the potential risk it poses to people living in the surrounding area.
The move assumes significance in the wake of a recent building collapse in New Seemapuri, which highlighted the dangers posed by unsafe structures in densely populated neighbourhoods.
Timely inspections and action against structurally weak buildings are considered essential to prevent accidents and protect residents, particularly in congested areas where a collapse can put several people at risk.
