The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on Tuesday strengthened its sanitation infrastructure by inducting 76 new sanitation vehicles and equipment for the Shahdara North and Shahdara South Zones, aiming to improve waste collection and cleanliness, particularly in congested and densely populated areas.

The new fleet was flagged off by Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways and Delhi BJP President Harsh Malhotra at Mahavir Swami Park in Shastri Park. The event was attended by Mayor Pravesh Wahi, Deputy Mayor Monika Pant, Standing Committee Chairperson Satya Sharma, MCD Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar, and other civic officials.
According to the MCD, 52 vehicles have been allocated to Shahdara North Zone and 24 vehicles to Shahdara South Zone. The fleet includes 24 tippers, 10 hook loaders, 28 battery-operated e-rickshaws, mini refuse collectors (Mini RCs), and mini dumpers. These vehicles are expected to improve door-to-door waste collection and sanitation services, especially in narrow lanes where larger vehicles face operational challenges.

Speaking at the event, Harsh Malhotra said that strengthening sanitation infrastructure is essential to achieving the goal of a cleaner and garbage-free Delhi. He praised sanitation workers for their contribution and said that with additional support and resources, the city’s cleanliness standards would continue to improve. He urged sanitation staff to work towards making Delhi the cleanest capital in the country.
Mayor Pravesh Wahi said that maintaining cleanliness is a shared responsibility of both civic authorities and residents. He expressed confidence that the induction of modern sanitation vehicles would enhance the efficiency of waste management and improve civic services across the two zones.
Deputy Mayor Monika Pant said the MCD has continued to provide sanitation services despite resource constraints and that the additional vehicles would further strengthen the Corporation’s ability to maintain a cleaner and healthier environment.
Standing Committee Chairperson Satya Sharma said the Corporation is working towards the target of eliminating Delhi’s garbage mountains by 2027 and highlighted the Delhi government’s support in strengthening sanitation infrastructure. She also acknowledged sanitation workers as the backbone of the civic body and reaffirmed the Corporation’s commitment to their welfare.
During the programme, IDBI Bank, under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, donated 21 water coolers to 21 Municipal Corporation schools, adding a social welfare component to the event.
The MCD said the induction of the new fleet is expected to significantly improve sanitation operations in Shahdara North and South Zones, contributing to the city’s broader cleanliness and waste management efforts.
