MCD’s Winter Action Plan: 52 Sweepers, 167 Sprinklers, and 28 Smog Guns in Full Force

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has stepped up its efforts to control air and dust pollution across the city keeping in view the rising AQI. Delhi Mayor Sardar Raja Iqbal Singh said that the Corporation is taking several steps to keep Delhi’s air cleaner and roads dust-free during the winter months.

MCD maintains about 6,130 km of roads where nearly 57,000 sanitation workers clean daily. The collected dust and silt are properly disposed of at designated sites. To keep major roads clean, MCD has deployed 52 Mechanical Road Sweepers that clean around 3,400 km of main roads on alternate days. Plans are also being made to add 18 more mechanical sweepers soon. In addition, 167 water sprinklers and 28 mobile anti-smog guns are being used to reduce dust pollution. The Corporation has also installed 20 fixed anti-smog guns at its landfill sites and plants, and 15 more at high-rise buildings.

From April to September 2025, MCD has resurfaced and strengthened 224 km of roads and repaired more than 7,600 potholes . An action plan worth Rs. 755 crore has been prepared to improve 591 km of roads and drainage systems in the next financial year to further reduce dust from damaged roads and open areas.

To stop pollution from construction and demolition (C&D) work, MCD is regularly monitoring all registered sites. At present, 760 sites are registered on the DPCC web portal, and action is being taken against violators . From Jan 2025 to Oct 2025, 1222 number of environment compensation notices amounting to ₹121,000,000 have been issued by Building Department for violations at C&D sites. The Building Department has also identified 149 high-rise buildings, such as malls, offices, hotels, and schools, for installing anti-smog guns.

In addition to these steps, strict enforcement action is being taken to ensure better sanitation and waste management. During the period from 1st to 31st October 2025, DEMS Department of MCD issued 5,322 challans related to sanitation and municipal solid waste violations, collecting a total fine amount of ₹15,50,220. The highest number of challans were issued in Najafgarh Zone (934), followed by Keshavpuram Zone (883) and City S.P. Zone (604).

Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh said that these enforcement drives play a crucial role in maintaining cleanliness and deterring violations related to littering, open dumping, and poor waste disposal practices.

MCD has also set up 106 sites for dumping C&D waste safely, with more sites being added soon. Around 59 of these sites have been developed with barricades, sprinklers, and signboards to control dust. Work on 19 sites is in progress . Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh said that MCD is fully committed to keeping Delhi clean and pollution-free.
