In Delhi’s densely populated neighbourhoods, where a narrow lane can suddenly turn into a maze of unauthorised floors, extensions and risky structures, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has intensified its city-wide enforcement drive.
On Wednesday, the civic body carried out 35 demolition actions across all 12 zones, besides sealing five properties and issuing four demolition orders for violations of building norms.The action comes amid growing concerns over buildings and constructions that can put residents and neighbours at risk.
For families living in congested areas, the issue is not merely about paperwork or building permissions—it can directly affect their safety, access to roads and emergency services, and the structural security of their homes.According to the MCD, the enforcement exercise targeted dangerous buildings, unauthorised constructions and violations of the Master Plan of Delhi (MPD) and Building Bye-Laws.
Unauthorised construction means construction carried out without the required permission or in violation of approved building plans.The civic body said its teams carried out major demolition actions in areas including Khadda Colony, Pul Pehladpur, Nangli Sakrawati, Palam, Rashid Market, Shakarpur, West Vinod Nagar, Shiv Vihar, Karawal Nagar and Ganesh Nagar Extension, among other locations.
The latest action also follows an extensive enforcement exercise conducted on Tuesday, when the MCD said 42 properties were demolished and seven properties sealed for violations of the MPD and Building Bye-Laws.Taken together, the two-day drive has resulted in 77 demolition actions and 12 sealing actions, according to figures released by the civic body.
Why the crackdown matters
Delhi’s building violations are often visible on the ground—an additional floor rising above an old structure, a shop extending into a passage or construction taking place in an already congested lane. But the consequences can become serious when such structures compromise safety.
The MCD has therefore maintained that enforcement is not only about regulating construction but also about preventing situations that could endanger people living or working around such properties.
The civic body said its field officials have been directed to maintain strict vigilance across the city and take action under the applicable provisions of the MPD, Building Bye-Laws and other regulations.At the same time, demolition drives can have a human side that is often less visible in official figures.
Behind every sealed or demolished property are residents, shopkeepers, workers and families whose daily lives can be disrupted. This makes proper verification, notice procedures and enforcement under the law particularly important.
The MCD said the drive will continue across all 12 zones, with a focus on unauthorised constructions, dangerous buildings and other violations that could pose risks to public safety.
For Delhi, where space is scarce and construction pressure remains intense, the bigger challenge will be ensuring that enforcement does not remain a one-day headline. Sustained inspections, timely action and compliance with building rules will determine whether these drives translate into safer neighbourhoods on the ground.
