Satya Niketan Collapse Fallout: MCD Suspends Five South Zone Officials, Building Owner Arrested

In the aftermath of the tragic Satya Niketan building collapse, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has taken swift disciplinary action. Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar announced the suspension of Deputy Commissioner Rakesh Kumar (BMID No. 40030820) along with four other senior officials of the South Zone.

The suspended officials include:

  • Rakesh Kumar, Deputy Commissioner, South Zone
  • Ranvir Singh, Superintending Engineer (SE), South Zone
  • Lalit Kumar Goel, Executive Engineer (EE, Building), South Zone
  • Sunil Chauhan, Assistant Engineer (AE, Building), South Zone
  • Ashish Kumar, Junior Engineer (Building), South Zone

As per the DMC Services (Control & Appeal) Regulations, 1959, the suspended officers will receive subsistence allowance under the rules.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has ordered strict and comprehensive action, emphasizing that public safety cannot be compromised. She is personally monitoring rescue and relief operations. The building owner has been arrested, and legal proceedings are underway.

In a decisive move, the Delhi Government has directed that all buildings with a fifth floor across the city be sealed immediately. Inspections of nearby PG accommodations and other structures are ongoing, with violations facing instant sealing.

Looking ahead, the government is preparing a policy mandating periodic structural audits and safety certification for all public-use buildings, including PGs, nursing homes, schools, and institutions. No public activity will be permitted in such premises until safety clearance is obtained.

Authorities reiterated that responsibility will be fixed at every level, and accountability will not be diluted.
