The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar Yesterday chaired an important brainstorming meeting on the proposed implementation of the Indore Waste Management Model in the West Zone on a pilot basis, followed by the South and Central Zones, where new concessionaires have taken up waste collection and transportation. The meeting focused on understanding and adapting key learnings of the Indore model to strengthen waste management, source segregation, field-level accountability and citizen participation.
During the meeting, the Commissioner also reviewed measures to combat air pollution and directed the concerned officers to strengthen the deployment of mechanical road sweepers, water sprinklers and anti-smog guns at identified locations. He further directed officials to expedite road maintenance works, including pothole repairs, paving and greening of roads.
The Commissioner directed the officers to maintain strict vigil against open and biomass burning. MCD will constitute surveillance teams comprising officers to monitor vulnerable locations and ensure timely action to prevent incidents of biomass burning.
The Commissioner also directed all Zonal Deputy Commissioners to organise a range of activities on October 2, 2026, to observe Swachh Bharat Diwas in remembrance of Mahatma Gandhi. The activities will include cleanliness and awareness programmes at public places and old age homes, special council meetings with public participation, plantation of trees, planters and shrubs at cleaned GVPs and CTUs under the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ initiative, advocacy on the SWM Rules, 2026 and four-way waste segregation, and administration of the Swachhata Pledge.
The Commissioner emphasised coordinated and sustained efforts by MCD officials, concessionaires and citizens to strengthen sanitation, waste management and environmental protection across Delhi. He directed the concerned officers to ensure effective ground-level implementation and regular monitoring of progress.
