From making it easier for patients to reach a hospital to ensuring that clogged drains do not turn into a bigger problem for residents, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Wednesday focused on some of the everyday civic issues that directly affect people’s lives.
MCD Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar inspected Balak Ram Hospital in the North Zone and reviewed the facilities available for patients and visitors. During the inspection, he directed officials to construct a proper pathway from the main approach road to the hospital entrance to ensure smooth movement of patients and their attendants.
For someone visiting a hospital with a sick family member, even a poor or obstructed approach can add to an already stressful situation. The Commissioner therefore directed officials to address the access issue and ensure that people can reach the hospital entrance without unnecessary difficulty.
Khirwar also ordered the relocation of a tree inside the hospital premises if required to remove an obstruction to movement and ensure the smooth delivery of medical services. He further directed officials to deploy an adequate workforce at the hospital and asked staff to remain committed to public convenience.
Focus shifts to Wazirabad drains
The Commissioner subsequently inspected Wazirabad and interacted with residents to understand the problems being faced in the area.
One of the key concerns was the condition of local drains. Officials were directed to remove accumulated silt, which means the layer of mud, soil and waste that settles at the bottom of drains and reduces their capacity to carry water.
The Commissioner also ordered the removal of ramps obstructing drain-cleaning operations. Such structures can make it difficult for cleaning teams and equipment to access drains properly, potentially affecting the flow of rainwater and wastewater.
For residents, drain cleaning is not merely a routine civic exercise. During heavy rainfall, blocked or poorly maintained drains can contribute to waterlogging, making it difficult for people to reach homes, markets, schools and workplaces. Effective desilting, therefore, becomes an important part of maintaining local drainage.
From inspection to implementation
The visit brought attention to two basic but important civic needs тАФ easy access to public healthcare and functioning drainage infrastructure.
The real test, however, will be on the ground. Residents will look to see how quickly the pathway at Balak Ram Hospital is developed, adequate staff is deployed and the Wazirabad drains are cleared of silt and other obstructions.
The directions issued during the inspection provide a roadmap. Their impact will ultimately depend on how swiftly and effectively they are implemented.
