Delhi’s landscape saw another day of civic enforcement on Thursday as the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) carried out 30 demolition actions across all 12 zones, targeting unauthorised constructions and violations of building norms.
The action comes amid a sustained MCD drive against structures that officials say violate the Master Plan of Delhi (MPD) and Building Bye-Laws. The civic body also sealed seven properties and issued 10 demolition orders during Thursday’s exercise.
For residents and shopkeepers in affected areas, such drives can mean more than just bulldozers and sealed premises. Behind every structure is often a family, a business or a long-running property dispute. At the same time, unauthorised construction and unsafe buildings can create serious risks for neighbours and passers-by, particularly in densely populated parts of the capital.
Multiple locations under scanner
The MCD said major demolition actions were carried out in Old Rajinder Nagar, Baljeet Nagar, Uttam Nagar, Rajouri Garden, Burari, Mandoli, Saboli, Jheel Khuranja, Ganesh Nagar Extension, Lalita Park, Laxmi Nagar and Gautampuri, among other areas.
The latest action follows an extensive enforcement exercise on Wednesday, when the MCD said 35 properties were demolished and five properties sealed for violations of the MPD and Building Bye-Laws.
The civic body has maintained that the enforcement campaign is aimed at checking unauthorised construction, dangerous buildings and other violations that could pose a threat to public safety.
12 zones, continued vigilance
The MCD has directed its field officials to keep a close watch across all 12 zones and take action under applicable rules.
The continuing crackdown also puts the spotlight on a larger civic challenge in Delhi: how to balance enforcement with the concerns of residents and property owners, while ensuring that construction activity does not compromise public safety.
The MCD said the enforcement drive will continue, with officials maintaining surveillance against illegal construction and unsafe structures across the city.
