The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Delhi State President Saurabh Bharadwaj held the BJP government’s rampant extortion and corruption responsible for the collapse of a three-storey building near Chawri Bazaar Metro Station, which claimed several lives.
Saurabh Bharadwaj said safety audits in Delhi have become a means of extorting bribes, with government departments failing to take concrete action against illegal construction. He said buildings are spared when bribes are paid and sealed when payments are refused.
AAP Delhi State President Saurabh Bharadwaj stated on X, “Another three-storey building has collapsed in Chawri Bazaar/Chandni Chowk. Several people are feared trapped under the debris. The Rekha Gupta government and the MCD have conducted multiple safety audits of buildings across Delhi, yet buildings continue to collapse. Why? Safety audits have been ordered repeatedly, but instead of taking concrete action, multiple departments have repeatedly collected bribes.
This is why buildings collapse every month.”Saurabh Bharadwaj further stated, “Earlier, only Delhi Police and MCD took bribes. After the Rekha Gupta government came to power, the Fire Department and the SDMs of the Revenue Department under her government also started collecting bribes from building owners. Those who refuse to pay bribes have their properties sealed by the MCD.
This exposes the selective nature of enforcement. It is shocking that two gyms in GK-2 Market in one ward have been sealed, while other gyms and commercial buildings in the same South Zone continue to operate.”
Meanwhile, Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the MCD (Municipal Corporation of Delhi), Ankush Narang, also strongly questioned the frequent building collapses caused by the corruption prevalent under the BJP government.
“The sudden and catastrophic collapse of a three-storey under-construction building in Gali Sitara, opposite Chawri Bazaar Metro Station, in Delhi’s famous Chawri Bazaar is extremely concerning and unfortunate. Several people are feared trapped under the debris,” he said.
Ankush Narang added, “Buildings are collapsing frequently in Delhi, putting people’s lives at risk, but the BJP government and the BJP-ruled MCD are busy indulging in corruption in Delhi. Who will put a stop to illegal construction and corruption? Is the responsibility of the BJP’s four-engine government limited to enjoying power and indulging in corruption?”
He concluded by asserting, “A high-level inquiry must be conducted into this incident, relief and rescue operations must be expedited, and strict action must be taken against the guilty officials and those responsible. The endangerment of the lives of Delhi’s people must stop now!”
