The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on Thursday suspended a Junior Engineer and an Assistant Engineer in connection with the collapse of a three-storey building in Old Delhi’s Chawri Bazar area, even as its initial assessment indicated that no complaint had been received against the structure and no booking had been initiated.
According to the MCD’s initial report, the building stood on a small plot measuring approximately 50 square metres. The civic body said it had not received any complaint regarding the building, including from the Delhi Police, and no booking had been made against it.
The report also mentioned that de-shuttering work (removal of temporary supports used during construction) was underway when the building collapsed.
The incident occurred around 9.50 am in Gali Sattara, Sheesh Mahal, opposite Chawri Bazar Metro Station. Two labourers were removing shuttering on the ground floor when the structure suddenly gave way, leaving two people seriously injured, according to initial information.
Taking disciplinary action, the MCD placed Junior Engineer Aman Dalal and Assistant Engineer Mohd. Naeem under suspension with immediate effect, pending further inquiry.
In separate office orders dated November 5, the Deputy Commissioner, Old Delhi Zone, cited a prima facie case of “severe dereliction of duty” in connection with the incident.
The MCD said further details would be shared after receipt of additional information.
