Delhi Mayor Pravesh Wahi Finds Lapses During Surprise Inspection of Sultanpuri MCD School, Orders Show-Cause Notice to Principal

A surprise inspection by Delhi Mayor Pravesh Wahi at a Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) primary school in Sultanpuri on Wednesday brought the condition of basic facilities and school management under scrutiny, with the mayor expressing displeasure over the lack of discipline, cleanliness and maintenance on the premises.

During his visit to the Municipal Primary School in B-2 Sultanpuri, located in the North-West Zone, Wahi found students wandering around the school premises instead of being engaged in classroom activities. Taking note of the situation, he questioned the apparent lack of discipline and reviewed the attendance of teaching staff.

The mayor also expressed dissatisfaction with the overall cleanliness and maintenance of the school. He summoned the Zonal Deputy Commissioner and the Deputy Director of Education, directing them to ensure accountability and instructing that a show-cause notice be issued to the school principal.

Going beyond a routine inspection, Wahi personally drank the water provided to students and tasted the mid-day meal to assess the quality of basic facilities available to children.Interacts with students, appreciates their enthusiasmDuring the inspection, the mayor interacted with students and asked them about their studies and school experience.

He expressed satisfaction with their responses and enthusiasm towards learning. However, the condition of the school raised questions about whether the infrastructure and administrative arrangements are keeping pace with the aspirations of children studying in civic-run institutions.

For many children from economically weaker families, MCD schools are not merely educational institutions but an important gateway to a better future. Access to clean drinking water, nutritious meals, hygienic classrooms and a disciplined learning environment remains essential to their education.

MCD schools to be improved in mission modeWahi said the civic administration was working in “mission mode” to improve the condition of MCD schools, with a focus on strengthening student facilities and improving the quality of education.

He also referred to the recent initiative by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, under which funds for school uniforms were directly transferred to the bank accounts of students enrolled in MCD schools through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).

Inspection raises larger questions about accountabilityThe Sultanpuri inspection has once again brought the spotlight on the functioning of municipal schools, particularly the implementation of basic standards of hygiene, discipline and teaching. While surprise inspections and show-cause notices can help identify administrative shortcomings, the real test lies in whether corrective measures are implemented on the ground.

For a child entering a classroom with dreams of a better tomorrow, a clean school, a present teacher, safe drinking water and a nutritious meal are not privileges but basic necessities.

The mayor said such inspections would continue regularly to ensure improvements in the functioning of MCD schools, reiterating that providing children with a safe environment and quality education remains the administration’s top priority.
