In a major crackdown on the illegal trade of hazardous Chinese Manjha, the Delhi Police Crime Branch has recovered 2,040 rolls of banned synthetic kite string from Uttam Nagar and arrested two accused, including the alleged supplier.
According to officials, the operation was conducted by the Central Range of the Crime Branch following specific intelligence about illegal storage of prohibited synthetic manjha at Hanuman Market in Uttam Nagar. Authorities said the timely action may have prevented serious injuries and deaths, as sharp synthetic kite strings have been linked to several accidents involving pedestrians, two-wheeler riders, children, and birds every year.

During the raid, police recovered 34 cartons containing 60 rolls each of banned Chinese Manjha from a ground-floor premises in Hanuman Market. The premises owner was identified as Shanky Singhal alias Kaalu, 36, a resident of Uttam Nagar.
During interrogation, Shanky allegedly disclosed that he had procured the banned manjha through WhatsApp from another trader, Manmohan, ahead of the Independence Day kite-flying season to earn quick profits by selling it at inflated prices.
Based on his disclosure, police traced and questioned Manmohan, 52, who allegedly admitted that he procured the synthetic manjha due to high market demand while operating his family’s wholesale kite business in Uttam Nagar.
Both accused have been arrested and further investigation is underway.
Police said Shanky Singhal was previously involved in a 2018 case registered at Uttam Nagar police station under IPC sections related to assault and criminal intimidation, along with provisions of the POCSO Act. Manmohan was earlier booked in a 2023 case under Section 188 IPC at Bindapur police station.
The sale and use of Chinese Manjha have been banned by authorities through gazetted notifications due to the severe risk posed to human lives, birds, and the environment.
