New Delhi, August 24, 2026: Old Delhi’s narrow lanes, crowded markets and historic streets are more than just landmarks of the national capital—they are a daily lifeline for thousands of residents, traders, workers and visitors. But with heavy footfall comes a familiar civic challenge: keeping the area clean, accessible and equipped with basic public amenities.
Against this backdrop, the Deputy Mayor on Monday held a high-level review meeting focused on sanitation, encroachment, pink toilet blocks, civic amenities and ongoing development works in the Old Delhi Zone.
The meeting, held at the Deputy Mayor’s office, was attended by Old Delhi Zone Deputy Commissioner Kanika, the Assistant Commissioner, officials from concerned departments, representatives of market associations and Chandni Chowk councillor Suman Kumar Gupta.
Local voices put civic problems on the table
The meeting provided an opportunity for market representatives and the area councillor to place ground-level concerns directly before the Deputy Mayor. Issues related to sanitation, civic infrastructure, market-area requirements and pending works were discussed in detail.
For people who live and work in Old Delhi, such issues are not merely administrative matters. Clean streets, functional toilets, unobstructed roads and timely civic works directly affect their everyday lives and livelihoods.
The Deputy Mayor directed officials to ensure that sanitation arrangements do not suffer from any shortcomings and that pending works are completed on priority within stipulated timelines.
She also made it clear that negligence in providing public amenities would not be tolerated. Officials were asked to regularly review ongoing projects and strengthen monitoring so that decisions taken on paper translate into visible improvements on the ground.
Keeping Old Delhi clean is a daily challenge
Old Delhi remains one of Delhi’s most historically and culturally significant areas and a major commercial hub. Its markets draw people from across the country and visitors from abroad, making civic management particularly challenging.
The Deputy Mayor emphasised that cleanliness, smooth movement, effective encroachment control and adequate public amenities must remain a priority in the area.
The focus on encroachment is particularly significant in densely populated market zones, where even small obstructions can affect pedestrian movement, traffic flow and access for emergency services.
From meeting rooms to the streets
The bigger test, however, will be implementation.
For residents and traders, the success of the review meeting will ultimately be measured not by the number of directions issued, but by what changes they see while walking through Old Delhi’s streets—cleaner surroundings, functioning public facilities, fewer obstructions and civic works completed without prolonged delays.
The Deputy Mayor said the Municipal Corporation of Delhi is committed to developing a clean, beautiful, well-organised and citizen-friendly Old Delhi. Better coordination among departments and stronger ground-level action have been identified as key to achieving that goal.
Officials have now been directed to implement the decisions taken during the meeting within a fixed timeframe and regularly update the Deputy Mayor on progress.
