New Delhi, August 24, 2026: Delhi’s battle against overflowing garbage and mounting pressure on landfill sites is increasingly shifting towards a simple idea—process waste where it is generated.A small but significant step in that direction was taken at Atam Vallabh Housing Society in Rohini Sector-9, where Delhi Mayor Pravesh Wahi inaugurated an ‘Aerobin’ along with a plastic waste drop box on August 23.
The initiative is aimed at encouraging residents to segregate waste and treat wet waste locally instead of sending it through the conventional waste-disposal chain.
According to the Mayor, the Aerobin uses bio-culture technology and can convert up to 10 kg of wet waste into compost in a single batch. The focus is not only on disposing of household waste but on turning a portion of it into a useful resource at the point where it is generated.
From household bins to compostFor Delhi, where a large volume of municipal waste is generated every day, decentralised waste processing can potentially reduce the amount of garbage transported to landfill sites.
The Aerobin model places greater responsibility on residents and housing societies to segregate their waste properly. Wet waste can be processed separately, while the dedicated plastic waste drop box provides a channel for collecting recyclable plastic.
The Mayor said such small-scale interventions can help prevent waste from reaching landfill sites and improve waste management at the neighbourhood level.
A street play was also organised at the housing society to spread awareness about cleanliness and the importance of public participation in keeping surroundings clean.The real test lies beyond inaugurationWhile the installation of an Aerobin may appear to be a modest intervention, its success will depend heavily on what happens after the inauguration.
Residents will need to consistently segregate wet and dry waste, use the facility correctly and ensure that the system is maintained. Without sustained participation, even modern waste-processing equipment can struggle to deliver its intended results.

MCD looking to strengthen sanitation machineryThe Mayor also highlighted the induction of several modern machines into the Municipal Corporation of Delhi’s sanitation fleet in recent months, saying these measures are intended to improve cleanliness standards across the city.
The initiative has been linked to the MCD’s broader “Delhi Ko Koode Se Azadi” campaign and the larger objective of supporting the Swachh Bharat vision.The Mayor appealed to Delhi residents to cooperate with the civic body and actively participate in maintaining cleanliness in their neighbourhoods.
For Delhi’s waste challenge, the bigger question is not simply how much garbage the city can collect, but how much waste it can prevent from becoming garbage in the first place. Initiatives such as the Aerobin seek to address that question at the community level—one housing society, one segregated bin and one batch of compost at a time.
