Satya Niketan Building Collapse Follow up: Amicus Curiae Observes That “Things Are Moving in the Right Direction”

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has intensified its inspection and enforcement drive against PG accommodation buildings and other buildings in the city, with the ongoing action also coming on record before the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India in Miscellaneous Application (C) Diary No. 17103/2026.

The order of the Supreme Court of India records the submission of the Learned Amicus Curiae that “it appears that things are moving in the right direction.” The Learned Amicus Curiae further submitted that, although the Delhi High Court had taken up the issue following the tragic incident involving a PG hostel, the relevant issues are being addressed in the present proceedings through the action being undertaken and reports being submitted by the concerned authorities in compliance with the orders passed from time to time.

The proceedings also record that inspections have been conducted in Delhi including the areas specifically covered by the directions in Delhi, namely Lajpat Nagar, Malviya Nagar, Saket and Sarojini Nagar.

MCD has already undertaken a comprehensive survey of PG accommodation buildings across Delhi, with approximately 1,355 buildings identified where PG facilities are operational and around 27,000 occupants recorded so far. The MCD is undertaking inspections and taking enforcement action wherever violations relating to unauthorised construction, misuse of premises, building regulations, fire safety and other statutory requirements are found.

Commissioner MCD Sanjeev Khirwar reiterated that the inspection, survey and enforcement exercise will continue across Delhi in a sustained manner. The MCD is committed to ensuring strict compliance with building regulations and statutory provisions, with public safety remaining its foremost priority.
