On the occasion of the 79th Independence Day, the Mayor of Delhi, Sardar Raja Iqbal Singh, hoisted the national flag today at Municipal Corporation of Delhi’s headquarters Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Civic Centre, and extended his greetings to all citizens.
On the occasion Chairperson of the Standing Committee Satya Sharma, Commissioner Ashwini Kumar, senior officials, and employees of the Corporation were also present. Following the flag hoisting ceremony, a cultural programme featuring patriotic songs was presented by students in the auditorium of the headquarters.
Addressing the gathering, the Mayor conveyed Independence Day greetings to all the officers and staff present. He appreciated the patriotic dance performances by the students. Mayor Sardar Raja Iqbal Singh stated that the cultural performances by students of MCD schools reflect that they are in no way inferior to those studying in private schools. Alongside academics, students in MCD schools are also experiencing holistic development.
The Mayor noted that while today we are able to breathe freely and move about independently, such freedom was not available before 1947. Back then, various restrictions were imposed upon us. For this freedom, our freedom fighters made the ultimate sacrifice. We must always remember and honour their sacrifice.
Mayor Sardar Raja Iqbal Singh further stated that the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, launched the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan on Independence Day in 2014, transforming cleanliness into a mass movement. As a result, a new sense of awareness regarding cleanliness has emerged among citizens. He informed that under the leadership of Hon’ble Chief Minister of Delhi, Ms. Rekha Gupta, the “Freedom from Garbage” cleanliness campaign is being conducted from 1st August to 31st August, with the objective of making Delhi a clean city. Public participation in this campaign is essential.
On this occasion, the Mayor also administered the oath of integrity to MCD officials and employees.
