A massive tragedy struck Westend Marg, Saiduljab, near Saket Metro Station on Friday night when a 400 sq yard building collapsed. The structure consisted of an old three-storey building with ongoing construction above it. At the time of the incident, work on the sixth storey was in progress.
The collapse buried a nearby temporary tin-shed canteen where children were dining. Eyewitnesses reported scenes of panic as locals rushed to rescue those trapped under the debris.
Authorities confirmed that the building was located in an unauthorized area (Ward No. 160) and was not part of the 1511 recognized colonies.
Rescue operations were immediately launched:
- Teams from NDRF, Delhi Police, and Fire Brigade reached the site.
- Nearly 20–25 victims were rescued from the rubble.
- As of now, no official report of fatalities has been released.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) also deployed heavy machinery, including JCBs, to assist in clearing the debris. However, police have cordoned off the area and restricted entry until the rescue operation is completed.
Officials are investigating the cause of the collapse, with preliminary reports pointing to unsafe construction practices in the unauthorized zone.
