Mayor’s Civic Body Vows Strict Action Against Encroachers at Heritage Sites

In a major enforcement drive, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) today cleared illegal encroachments from heritage monument sites in Zamrudpur village, South Zone, acting on directions in a Supreme Court matter titled Rajeev Suri vs ASI & Ors.

The intensive operation was carried out by a joint team of MCD departments with support from the outer police force and local police. Over 60 MCD staff were deployed, using heavy machinery to dismantle unauthorized structures inside the heritage premises. Walls built within the monuments were demolished, illegal godowns and cattle-rearing sheds were removed, and three iron gates obstructing entry to the heritage building were taken down.

MCD staff also cleared construction and demolition waste from the site, removing more than 10 truckloads of debris on the spot. Officials confirmed that the remaining waste will be removed in the coming days, with further encroachment removal drives planned to ensure complete restoration of the heritage complex.

Authorities emphasized that the action was necessary to reclaim government land and safeguard heritage sites for public access and community safety. The civic body reiterated its commitment to strict enforcement against encroachers, ensuring that public spaces and heritage monuments remain free of obstructions.

This operation highlights MCD’s broader agenda of maintaining a clean, safe, and accessible environment across Delhi, while protecting cultural heritage from misuse and illegal occupation.
